On February 2nd, National Tater Tot Day recognizes a kitchen staple. In the United States, we consume approximately 3.5 billion of these nuggets of potato goodness per year.
These bite-sized bits of golden deliciousness created from the scraps from making French fries once were used to feed cattle. But how do the cast-offs from making French fries become the bite-sized, kitchen-friendly morsels we love to devour today? Through persistence and ingenuity, of course!
Two brothers, Nephi and Golden Grigg, along with their brother-in-law started dabbling in frozen food when they rented a plant on the Oregon and Idaho borders in 1934. They focused on making French fries, but the waste fed to cattle seemed excessive. Was there a way to reduce the excess? Maybe, but instead, they chose to create a product from the excess. Not only did the scrapped and shredded bits form into tasty bites when blanched and fried, but they also fit into their product line, too. They froze well, could be baked, and were delicious! By 1952, they purchased the plant, forming the Oregon Frozen Foods Company that would later become Ore-Ida.
Seasoned with spices or baked into a casserole, tater tots make a meal, side dish, or a snack celebration. We dip them, pop them, or just savor them.
🍳 RECIPE: Minnesota Hotdish (Tater Tot Casserole)
- 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 2 cups)
- 1 pound 80-percent lean ground beef
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 2 cups frozen cut green beans, thawed (8 ounces)
- 1 3/4 cups frozen corn kernels, thawed (8 ounces)
- Two 10-ounce cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1 pound frozen potato tots
- 1 c cheese
1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2.) Add the oil to a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until soft and beginning to brown, about 15 minutes. Add the beef to the onions and cook until the meat is brown, stirring and scraping the bottom of the skillet to release the yummy brown bits, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
3.) Transfer the beef and onion mixture from the skillet into a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Scatter the green beans and corn evenly on top. Spread the cream of mushroom soup over top and top with frozen potato tots. Bake uncovered for 1 hour; the potato tots should be golden brown. Serve.
On April 2nd, we celebrate National Handmade Day. We felt this was the perfect opportunity to give a fun behind the curtain look at how the sausage is made... well, in this case, everything that goes into our first signature product, our hand poured soy tumbler candles.
]]>A person once said, “your candles aren’t anything special... it’s just wax in a glass!” Being the professional I am, I just smiled and nodded, but my inner DIVA wanted to unleash a tirade Miranda Priestly style ala Devil Wears Prada. “A glass of wax?! {gasp} What you are so blithely unaware is that glass of wax was developed by the 2 small business owners that stand before you. The sleepless nights of sourcing quality ingredients from domestic suppliers during a global pandemic. 15 years of 14-hour days... Candle after candle hand poured from natural waxes grown by American farmers scented to perfection to evoke a childhood memory that could bring even the coldest of hearts to tears... Sure, you pick up some lumpy paraffin blend candle from a clearance bin at your local grocery store, because you don’t really think there’s a difference, but you’ll reflect on this moment when you’re cleaning the soot off your walls... Just a glass of wax? I don’t think!”
On April 2nd, we celebrate National Handmade Day. We felt this was the perfect opportunity to give a fun behind the curtain look at how the sausage is made... well, in this case, everything that goes into our first signature product, our hand poured soy tumbler candles.
Every new candle really begins with the fragrance. They are chosen from a selection of our domestic suppliers typically on a seasonal basis as new trends appear or when we decide to curate a special collection or thematic event. Once received by us, the fun begins...
If they pass the all-important “out of the bottle” smell test, they’ll get incorporated into test batches for compatibility. Candles get tested for cold throw (the scent when candles aren’t lit), hot throw (the scent when candles are properly burning with a full melt pool of wax), flame height, burn time, durability, and overall experience.
Each fragrance reacts differently when applied to our candle products. Some fragrances will appear weaker when cold than they are when lit. Fragrances may also develop over time as it cures with the natural soy wax. Scents that pass the muster make their way for sale on our website. Fragrances that don’t work well for candles still are given life in other home fragrance applications, or in our bath, body, and beauty care products.
The “chosen ones” for production that appear on our website require their own marketing package. Online sales are a visual media. We need to create the perfect image so a customer can almost smell the product in front of them. This requires a description that really takes you there. Even the simplest of scents can get comprised of dozens of individual fragrance notes. That all important fragrance description is coupled with imagery.
We choose the perfect photo to represent the overall scent. These images are either taken in-house or come from a collective of local and national freelance photographers. Product packaging is sourced, including our union made glassware, bags, boxes, and even the green twist ties that close each candle. Labels are mocked up, safety warnings strictly adhered to by industry standards are added, and everything gets printed. We also handle our own product photography to best accurately depict the final product that will inevitably reach our customers.
Once everything is in place, it’s finally ready for sale... That’s right, we haven’t even gotten around to selling a product before all those steps take place! But after a few more hours of time spent adding files to our website and other sales platforms, a few social media posts, and fingers crossed... {CHA-CHING} New Order Notification.
A customer has picked out their ideal candle... the reasoning each personal to them. We’ve heard some great stories over the years. It’s now our responsibility to make a product equality special for them to experience.
Each jar is wicked by hand, properly sized for the container, factored with the individual fragrance. Our custom blend of soy wax is weighed to the ounce and is slowly melted, ready to be incorporated with the fragrance oil. Fragrances are custom blended at the time of purchase to ensure that only the best candles leave our workshop. The wax and fragrance combo is then colored by eye with natural dyes to best match the overall scent experience. Â After some additional hand stirring, the wax is poured by hand into the glass. Wicks are straightened and pulled taut to maintain proper burning throughout the life of the candle. They are then allowed to naturally cool before trimming and finishing touches.
Candles are wiped down and labeled by hand, with both the scent label on the front of the jar, and a fragrance label with scent identifying number on the bottom. Each jar is then bagged in eco-friendly wrap to maintain fragrance. They get rolled in our signature tissue paper and gift boxed, before final labeling... then off to the customer!
Then we wait with bated breath for them to ship all over the world, hoping at every stop along the way they aren’t damaged in transit, and that the recipient loves the candle that was made especially for them, as much as we loved crafting it.
So yeah, it’s safe to say our candles are more than just wax in a glass!
With now over 2,000 fragrances to choose from, we hope you’ll find the one you love... Explore our entire Artisan Hand Poured Soy Candle product line.

Each year on October 11th, National Coming Out Day encourages civil awareness recognizing and supporting those in the LGBTQ community.
The day celebrates individuals who publicly identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender – coming out regarding their sexual orientation and/or gender identity being akin to a cultural rite of passage for LGBT people.
One in two Americans knows someone who is gay or lesbian. The ratio applied to transgender Americans is one in ten.
The day is dedicated to raises awareness of the civil rights of the LGBTQ community. Through education and support, and sharing their stories, it is hoped they may be more able to live openly and safely.
As more of the LGBTQ community come out, those who know them are more likely to become more educated. They also become more supportive and understanding, too.
GET INVOLVED: Attend a rally. Support someone you know as the approach coming out to their friends and loved ones. Share your coming out stories. Ask questions or learn more by visiting hrc.org. Learn about the Stonewall Uprising or other pivotal events in the LGBTQ community.
HISTORY: In 1988, Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary National created Coming Out Day on the anniversary of National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights to show support for the LGBTQ community. Eichberg was a New Mexico psychologist and founder of the personal growth workshop, The Experience. O’ Leary was an openly gay political leader from Los Angeles and at the time, the head of the National Gay Rights Advocates. Together, they created the day as a reminder that coming out is one of their most powerful basic tools.
Typically made with a corn tortilla and filled with cheese, we heat quesadillas until the cheese melts. Then it hits the grill or fryer until just crispy. Some people also include other fillings such as cooked sausage, chicken, pork, or beef. And don’t forget the toppings. Fresh tomatoes, salsa, herbs, sour cream, guacamole, or chilies bring a whole other level of flavor to the quesadilla. Don’t forget to finish it with a squeeze of lime. Serve it with an ice-cold beer or a margarita, and the meal is complete.
Families love quesadillas, too! In households around the country, families include quesadillas as a popular mealtime solution. One in three people are making quesadillas at least once a week. Additionally, quesadillas have crossed over from authentic Mexican restaurant menus to more typical chain restaurants. Even higher-end gourmet eateries include them on their menus. Their simplicity allows for easy customization and people of all ages love to eat to them, too.
GET INVOLVED: Can you taste them yet? You will! Whether for a snack or a meal, quesadillas hit the spot. Just gather up your favorite ingredients for a quesadilla night. Be sure to include the most essential ingredient – family. Together you can build authentic quesadillas and celebrate the day.
]]>National Quesadilla Day on September 25th encourages us to pull a chair up to the table and eat some authentic Mexican food. While it’s not a sandwich or a taco, the quesadilla satisfies snack cravings while also completing a meal.

Fill them with tender chicken, beef or pork, and lots of vegetables for a hearty meal. Some other delicious fillings include turkey and seafood. Popular veggies include potatoes, carrots, green beans, and peas. Finally, the gravy and seasonings make the pies irresistible. Avoiding these things is supposed to keep Jews from focusing on superficial comforts. Fasting from food and drink cleanses the body and spirit. Before the fast begins, friends and family gather together for a feast. This feast needs to be finished before sunset. The food eaten during the feast is to provide strength for the next 25 hours.

The commandment to observe Yom Kippur each year is found in the book of Leviticus. This book is part of the Torah, which includes God’s commandments to the Jews. Leviticus 16:29-30 states, “And this shall be a statute forever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourns among you. However, the origin of this giant sandwich is a bit of mystery. The epicenter of the controversy seems to be eastern Pennsylvania between the DiCostanzas and DePalmas. Both lay claim to being the first to make the hoagie. One family claims to have been making the sandwich since 1923 and the other since 1925. But who has the proof?
Another story from the Philadelphia area takes place during World War I. It describes shipyard workers bringing large Italian sandwiches to work wrapped in newspaper. The large sandwiches helped the workers through their long, grueling workdays. In fact, the workers nicknamed the massive sandwiches “hoggies” because anyone eating them at one sitting would have to be a hog. The Philadelphia accent explains the transformation of the word. The dialect often exaggerates the vowel sounds changing “hoggies” to “hoagies” quite easily.
One story talks out of school – almost literally. At one time, if a kid skipped school it was called being “on the hook” or “playing hokey.” A “hokey” sandwich could be bought for a price a kid on the lam could afford. Eventually “hokey” became “hoagie” especially if the kids were skipping school.

Another goal of the awareness day aims to grow support for the group called the National Eczema Society. Finally, the week places a focus on support for the places eczema sufferers and their families can go to get more information, friendly advice, and assistance.
Eczema is a medical condition which causes patches of skin to become rough and inflamed with blisters. The skin itches, and if scratched too much, can bleed.
According to the National Eczema Society, one in five children and one in twelve adults have eczema.
The specific cause of eczema is not known. However, it is thought to be caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. It is not contagious, and children are more likely to develop such a condition if a parent has had the same or similar condition.
While no treatment is available to eradicate eczema, several strategies help to ease the discomfort.

]]>The term milkshake first appeared in print in 1885. During this period, milkshake referred to an alcoholic beverage described as a “sturdy, healthful eggnog type of drink” blended with eggs, whiskey, and other ingredients. Pharmacies served the drink as a tonic and a treat to customers. By 1900, pharmacies offered this “wholesome drink” with either chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla syrup.
Another addition to the milkshake was malted milk powder. Made from malted barley, wheat flour, and dehydrated whole milk, malted milk tastes a bit like toasted caramel. ]]>National Chocolate Milkshake Day on September 12th brings chocolate and ice cream lovers together. Forget the calories for just this one day and enjoy a sweet tall, thick and delicious, chocolate milkshake!
The term milkshake first appeared in print in 1885.
It made its debut around the 1870s as a shelf-stable dry milk product. Add the powder to a chocolate milkshake, and transform the creamy goodness into a malted chocolate milkshake. Along with milkshakes, malted milk milkshakes became popular drinks at soda fountains around the 1920s.

]]>For many, September 11, 2001, began like any other weekday. We made our way to work. Children attended school. We shopped, had coffee, waited in line at a drive-thru. Those of us who weren’t in New York City heard the first reports on the radio or television. A friend or neighbor alerted us to a plane flying into one of the Twin Towers. We felt disbelief. An accident, perhaps, a miscalculation. Then, a second plane flew into the second tower. Our disbelief turned into uncertainty and concern.
Those on the ground faced terror and obstacles they had never known. As a set of coordinated suicide attacks organized by the militant group Al Qaeda targeted the World Trade Center, the rest of the nation witnessed the unbelievable. And then a third plane crashed into The Pentagon. And yet another crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA.
Every year since that fateful day, the United States comes together to remember the fallen. We remember the first responders and those who made difficult decisions. Since that day, memorials have risen from the ashes.
OBSERVE MOMENTS OF SILENCE
Volunteer – While remembering the day, help an organization with meaning to you. Improve the lives of others and the world around you. Spread kindness. Offer them hope. Share your skills with those who need them most.
Remember – Remember those killed in the attacks. Remember to stand united as a Nation. Join others in prayer vigils or memorial events.

HISTORY
The numbers on suicide are grim. Each year, about 47,000 people die by suicide in the United States. That means, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the country. On average, 129 suicides occur in the United States per day. About 1.4 million people attempt suicide each year.
Suicide is a global phenomenon. Throughout the world, 800,000 people die each year by taking their own life. Among 15-29-year-olds, suicide is the leading cause of death. Multiple risk factors impact causes for suicide. The leading risk factors include mental illness, inability to cope with life stressors, and chronic pain and illness. Some of the most vulnerable groups for committing suicide include refugees, prisoners, and those in the LGBT community. Another vulnerable group – bullied kids.
The sad thing is suicide is entirely preventable. Reducing access to firearms and medications is one way to prevent it. Other methods include early care for the mentally ill, school-based interventions, and training health workers to assess and manage suicidal behavior. The strongest risk factor for committing suicide is a previous suicide attempt. Because of this, follow-up care and support for those who have attempted suicide are crucial.
Key collaborators for suicide prevention include faith community members, educators, parents, substance abuse services, social services, and mental health organizations.
GET INVOLVED:Â Besides the IASP, the World Health Organization (WHO) plays a key role in promoting World Suicide Prevention Day. Some of the events held each year include:
HISTORY: IASP organized the first World Suicide Prevention Day since 2003. Shortly after, WHO began co-sponsoring events for suicide awareness and prevention. The theme that year was “Suicide Can Be Prevented!” Other themes throughout the years have included, “Saving Lives, Restoring Hope,” “Connect, Communicate, Care,” and “Working Together to Prevent Suicide.” Today, nearly 70 countries join together to bring awareness to suicide prevention.

A shofar is a ram’s horn trumpet that was used by ancient Jews during religious ceremonies. The holiday begins at sundown on the Hebrew calendar date of 1 Tishrei. The month of Tishrei occurs either in September or October on the Gregorian calendar.
Here are some more facts surrounding this celebratory Jewish holiday:
While many Jewish people enjoy a nice nap on the Sabbath, this is not the case with Rosh Hashanah. According to the Talmud, if one sleeps at the beginning of the year, his good fortune also sleeps. Some people take this so seriously, they don’t sleep at all during this holiday.
GET INVOLVED: Jewish people have many customs on this special holiday. Some Christians even take part in the Rosh Hashanah celebrations. Even though it’s a celebration, Rosh Hashanah is also a time of spiritual reflection and prayer. Some participate in a waterside ceremony called tashlich. During this ceremony, people walk to a fresh body of water and say a prayer. By doing this, they are symbolically casting their sins into the waters.
Other ways to participate include:
HISTORY: The origins of Rosh Hashanah are found in the Old Testament. Leviticus 23:24-25 states, “In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe a day of rest, a memorial proclaimed with the blowing of the shofar, a holy convocation.” Through the years, the Biblical “holy convocation,” the “Day of Judgment,” and the anniversary of the creation of the world, were combined to create the official Jewish New Year. In the 2nd century C.E., the day became known as Rosh Hashanah.

This National Day also signals the official end of summer. Those who work hard, need time to play, too. With the school year starting and summer winding down, the long weekend beckons. They use the extra day earned to spend with families and catch some R&R. Some will explore cities while others will seek outdoor adventure. No matter where it’s spent, it’s well earned.
GET INVOLVED:Â Many families spend Labor Day weekend on vacation. They pack the campgrounds full or explore tourist towns for one last hurrah! As you celebrate this day, consider and appreciate your hard work and how it has added to the well-being and prosperity of our country.
HISTORY: On September 5, 1882, Labor Day first honored workers in New York City. The observance later moved to the first Monday in September in 1884. However, the observance wasn’t officially recognized by any government entity until 1885 when a municipal ordinance was passed. Interestingly, Oregon recognized the day in 1887 before New York state’s bill passed. As more states recognized the observance, its popularity grew. Then, in 1894, Congress declared the day to be a national observance.
]]>Labor Day on first Monday of every September recognizes the men and women who labor to build this country. Through a time-honored tradition with roots in the coordinated efforts of the labor movement of the 1800s, we salute the American workforce.

]]>The UN recognizes that volunteering and philanthropic work provides social bonding while creating resilient societies. Giving to those in need helps to alleviate the worst effect of humanitarian crises. The basic necessities of food, clothing, and shelter are provided when others give. These donations also spread a message of humanity to the underprivileged and those surrounded by conflict.
Today, nearly half of the earth’s population lives in poverty. That’s 3 billion people living on less than $2.50 a day. One billion children around the world live in poverty. About 22,000 of these children die each day. Hunger is one of the leading causes of death among the poor. Millions of people throughout the world don’t have access to clean drinking water. Two million children die each year from preventable diseases. Twenty-five percent of all human beings don’t have electricity.
These sobering statistics point to the fact that there are an endless number of needs in our world. While you can’t possibly help everyone, you can do your part by helping someone. The International Day of Charity is a great time to do just that. As the saying goes, “it’s better to give than to receive.”
GET INVOLVED:Â There are many ways for you to celebrate the International Day of Charity. One of which is researching different charities. There are thousands of them out there, and by researching, you might find an under-supported one you can promote. You could volunteer at a homeless shelter, soup kitchen, or another place in your community that serves the underprivileged. Give to a food pantry or run a food bank outside your local grocery store.
If you want to give a monetary donation, peruse crowdfunding platforms, and find a need to fill. There are also many nonprofit organizations where you can sponsor a child living in poverty.
Other people or organizations that always need volunteers include churches, animal shelters, and senior centers.Chances are, you won’t have to go too far to help someone in need. That person in need might be your next-door neighbor or the homeless person at that intersection you always drive by. Whoever they are, today is a great day to give.
HISTORY: Mother Teresa of Calcutta is one of the most well-known humanitarians in modern history. It’s due to her selfless devotion to serving the poor that September 5th was chosen as International Day of Charity. It was on this day in 1997 that Mother Teresa passed away at the age of 87. In 2011, the Hungarian Parliament chose to commemorate the anniversary of her death by making it a national holiday for their country. In 2012, the UN General Assembly resolved to make the Hungarian holiday an International one.

Throughout the ages, several famous and fabulous beards come to mind. The romantics may quote The Bard and wax poetic when reminded of Shakespeare’s Van Dyke style.
Another memorable speaker with a historically recognizable beard, Abraham Lincoln followed the advice of a young admirer. In a letter to the Republican nominee of 1860, Grace Bedell suggested that if he “let your whiskers grow” he might gain more votes. Lincoln went unshaven and a month later, he was headed for the White House.
Beards come in all sizes. The band ZZ Top can attest to that. Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill’s iconic beards help to identify the group’s image. Ironically, the one original member who doesn’t sport an epic beard bears the last name – Frank Beard.
Speaking of epic beards, the record for the world’s longest beard goes to Hans Langseth. Originally from Norway, Langseth immigrated to the United States. According to Guinness World Records, at the time of his death in 1927, Langseth’s beard measured 17 feet 6 inches long.

For parents struggling to make ends meet, the ability to look their children in their eyes over a meal instead of into hungry eyes is a difference made by supporting food banks. Food banks fill the gap for those living on a meager budget. Many food banks offer educational opportunities that help people change their situation and begin anew. Often, those who have benefited from the programs return to volunteer and contribute to the very food bank that staved off hunger to do the same for others.

Food banks fill the gap for those living on a meager budget. Many food banks offer educational opportunities that help people change their situation and begin anew. Often, those who have benefited from the programs return to volunteer and contribute to the very food bank that staved off hunger to do the same for others.
GET INVOLVED: Help a neighbor, a friend, coworker or a child by making a donation. Volunteer at your local food bank. Food banks take nonperishable food items and cash donations every day. Check their needs list for the fresh items they are seeking.

]]>In San Francisco, California, in 1905, 11-yr-old Frank Epperson was outside on his porch, mixing water with a white powdered flavoring to make soda. Upon going inside, he left it there on the porch with the stirring stick still in it. That night the temperature reached a record low and the following morning, Frank discovered the drink had frozen to the stick.
Years later, in 1922, Epperson introduced his treat at a fireman’s ball where it was a huge success. Then in 1923, he made and sold his frozen treat-on-a-stick at an amusement park in Alameda, California. Epperson applied for a patent in 1924 for his frozen confectionery, which he called “Epsicle” ice pop. He then renamed it “Popsicle“.
