National Rice Month — Celebrated Every September
Every September, the world pauses to honor one of the most ancient, beloved, and culturally rich staples ever cultivated: rice. Grown on every continent except Antarctica, rice has nourished civilizations for over 130 million years — and today, more than 40,000 varieties exist worldwide. At OverSoyed™, we celebrate that rich legacy all month long with a curated collection of rice-inspired fragrances, skincare, body care, and home fragrance — each one handmade-to-order right here in Pittsburgh, PA.
A Grain Steeped in History
Rice is the oldest known food still consumed today, first cultivated roughly 7,000 years ago in southeastern Asia. The Chinese word for rice is the same word used for "food" — a testament to how deeply the grain is woven into the fabric of daily life. From communal wet-rice paddies that shaped philosophies of harmony and collective care, to the Japanese tradition of okome (uncooked rice) as a symbol of prosperity, rice has always been more than sustenance — it's culture, history, and identity.
In the United States, nearly 85% of domestically consumed rice is grown in just six states: Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Texas. It is the second most produced grain in the world after corn — and one of the most nutritionally versatile.
The Four Types of Rice:
- White Rice — The most common variety; milled for a smooth texture, though lower in nutrients than its counterparts.
- Brown Rice — A whole-grain powerhouse rich in thiamine, iron, and zinc, with a satisfying, nutty chew.
- Black Rice — Classified as its own botanical species; deeply earthy with a low glycemic index, making it an excellent choice for balanced nutrition.
- Red Rice — Bursting with antioxidants that give it its vibrant hue; similar to black rice in nutritional profile, with an added antioxidant punch.
