The History of National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is observed every year on August 4th — a day dedicated to one of America’s most beloved and enduring culinary inventions.
The chocolate chip cookie was born in 1938 at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, when Ruth Wakefield — a trained dietitian and skilled cook — added broken pieces of a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar to her butter drop cookie dough. The result was a revelation. Rather than melting into the dough as she expected, the chocolate held its shape, creating pockets of rich, melted chocolate in every bite. The Toll House Cookie was an immediate sensation.
Nestlé soon struck a deal with Wakefield: in exchange for the rights to print her recipe on their chocolate bar packaging, she received a lifetime supply of Nestlé chocolate. By 1939, Nestlé began scoring their semi-sweet chocolate bars for easy breaking — and by 1941, the chocolate chip as we know it was born.
Today, the chocolate chip cookie is the most popular cookie in the United States, with an estimated 7 billion consumed annually. It has inspired countless variations — from brown butter and sea salt to double chocolate and tahini — and remains a cornerstone of American baking culture.
